Fem hästväsen i flock på Vitemölle Strand 2020
Hästens väsen i ”Experimentellt kulturarv”

The horse as the essence of the project “Experimental cultural heritage”
Elisabet Malmström,
Artist and Associate Professor in Education
Kivik, Sweden
I was born in the middle of Sweden, in Södertälje, south of Stockholm. My parents moved to Lund when I was eleven. I have done my school in Lund and my univerity studies in the Arts and education in Lund and Stockholm. In 1973 I bought my first summer cottage here at beautiful Österlen and since 1996 I have lived permanently in my cottage. I have my atelje for painting and my graphics workshop here. Since 2016 I am retired from my work as associate professor in Education at Kristianstad University.
I am Happy to be invited to join this project, ”Experimental cultural heritage”, which is unique, I think, with the ambition to combine science, archeology and the Arts; the Arts provides research and vice versa. The project works with the landscape as method. And my theme is the horse. So by the end of the project I will have my understanding, ”answers” to: What is experimental cultural heritage? What is a horse?
As an artist and a human being it is not difficult to feel connection, touch and soul, with animal beings. I ride a horse and I love that and to join a group of other horsekeepers. I love the landscape I live in. Through my horse, I learn something new every time I ride. Among people in common there is a new born interest for the communication, that grows between people and animals, and also to communicate this feeling with each other.
The brook horse, or ”Bäckahästen” is a magical mythic creature in Skåne. It is a large, white and beautiful horse that lives by streams and lakes. At first it pretends to be a kind, ordinary horse, so that people will want to ride it. But really, the brook horse wants to trick both children and adults into the water so that they drown. It was said that the brook horse was sneaky and tricky. The kids think the horse is so nice that they want to ride it. It didn't matter how many children there were, the horse back only got longer the more children who sat on it. If you want to prevent a brook horse from drowning the children, throw a piece of steel between the horse and the water. Then the horse cannot walk that way, and its power is broken.
I often paint the horse in a fantasy landscape. The horse might have wings to fly across it. I use the horse symbolically in my painting or graphics as a being or an angel.
I have some examples and sketches in progress. I want to learn new things about "my horse" by joining this project, as I said earlier Today my horse in the project “Experimental cultural heritage” is a creature and it is made of concrete that is weather resistant. This, the weather resistance, was the relationship I had to take into account in my work. My goal at present is to produce more horse creatures and place them in the landscape like a flock. What follows I hope, will make sense.
For the online exhibition in summer 2020, I have made some new creatures (See attached pictures1-3). My horse is sensitive and she surprises me very often, almost every day. She likes to be in the flock (See attached picture 4). She is my friend and I can feel her mind. My aim is to make works, paintings and graphics, maybe sculptures for an exhibition on the theme "The horse in experimental cultural heritage".
